Crit questions

Please be honest with feedback, posts to look at are tagged with 'crit'.
  1. I have tried to use a different font to represent each speaking voice, are these working? appropriate?
  2. So far I have used very limited colours, should I chose a colour for each speaking voice or stick to black and white? Also, should I experiment with a gritty background texture or keep a clean look?
  3. Are my test pieces successful? Any more so than others? why?
  4. As I am working mostly with text, I am struggling to come up with an interesting DVD menu, I am thinking of using animated text for these, any other suggestions?
  5. Any suggestions how I can now finish these off into finished idents? The sound clips are all shorter than 10 seconds so I can add a closing scene to each with channel logo and film information etc?

  1. Hello Paul. After looking at all your work I think you have a a good and relevant subject with an accurate approach. However I did notice that you did not have any research on Goodfella's their selfs possibly just a background check on them would be relevant in order to understand a bit about what has inspired you in to producing these videos.

Also I think some research on typefaces and colour can only help your mark, Just to show why you have chosen them and why they are relevant to the videos this would come under the critical examples side of thing.

I do believe there is a great technical competence in your video examples and they work very well now I do think you should produce some more examples to how you got to these final videos your at now.

I also saw you looking at an after effects book. why not scan some pages in on your context and write a bit about what inspired you?!

The only problem I have with your videos are that if you havent seen the films you don't know what they are on about. I believe that this can be sorted out by finishing with something like:

    TCM Presents
    Goodfellas gangster
    season.
    coming soon.

    etc

Overall great work Paul I am really impressed with your work and videos they are at a high standard.

  2. 1. The motions themselves work, however not sure that using a different font for each ident is a good idea, as the idents need to function as a set/series. Look at the existing typefaces used by TCM, Ch4 and Five. Try to limit yourself to 2/3 as not to over-complicate the animations.

    2. Using a limited colour palette is something that works well for keeping the animations as part of a series.
Due to the nature of TCM, and thanks to your contextual and critical understanding of the program, keeping the animations clean and clear is the best approach.

    3. Best: Vegas, technical competence, visual quality, research.
Overall they are, but like said in 1, 2, need to establish a functioning palette and make some solid type decisions.

    4. http://idents.tv, tv-ark.net.
This is where you can utilise a colour for each film at the end of each animation, look at some more idents for the end frames, they use simple transitions and focus mainly on the logo/branding of the channel.

    5. See 4.
